D3 Energy Takes Aim at Water Influx to Unlock South African Gas
Gas is there. It bubbles from deep within the earth. But at D3 Energy's Nooitgedacht Project in South Africa, that gas isn't flowing freely. Deeper water inflows have choked production, forcing the company to initiate urgent remedial work next week.
The Subterranean Snag
Downhole logging at D3 Energy Ltd (ASX:D3E, OTCQX:DNRGF) confirmed gas-bearing zones in both the NGT245 D and NGT245 E wells. This was the good news. The bad news? The same analysis pinpointed deeper water levels, actively restricting gas output.
Recent geophysical scans revealed a clear issue: water from deeper production zones had risen above the gas-bearing intervals in both wells. Reservoir pressure is extremely low. This elevated water level halts the gas. It simply can't move.
High-tech downhole cameras captured the problem. They identified the gas zones before the water rose, inhibiting flow. The video evidence showed gas bubbling through the water column, confirming its presence within the target areas.
Cementing the Path Forward
D3 Energy will isolate these problematic water-producing zones. Remedial cementing is the chosen method. Work is scheduled to begin next week across both wells. The goal is simple: restore gas flow to the levels seen during initial drilling operations.
Managing Director and CEO David Casey addressed the setback. "Logging has helped explain why gas flow subsided during completion operations," Casey stated. "Encouragingly, however, logging has confirmed that this is in large part due to water rising from a zone below to above the gas bearing zone."
"While it is anticipated that remedial work should resolve this, it is nonetheless incredibly encouraging that both wells intersected gas bearing zones in what is our first drilling operation at Nooitgedacht."
The NGT245 D and NGT245 E wells target faults and associated fractures within the Ventersdorp and Witwatersrand formations. This drilling campaign marks D3 Energy's first at Nooitgedacht. It aims to assess reservoir deliverability. It also gathers vital information on helium and methane concentrations.
Nooitgedacht falls within D3 Energy's wholly-owned ER315 permit in South Africa's Free State. It lies approximately 40 kilometres from the company's Production Right application area. Success here will provide additional insights into the broader potential of the ER315 acreage.
D3 Energy pushes ahead. They expect to resume gas production soon, turning a temporary obstruction into a deeper understanding of their valuable South African assets.
