Mont Blanc Crumbles: Europe's Icicle Icon Loses Its Grip
The granite teeth of Mont Blanc are loosening. Where ice once held ancient rock firm, heat now pries. Climbers found routes impassable this summer. Rocks rained down. This is not the eternal mountain of legend.
For centuries, communities on the flanks of Western Europe's highest peak gazed upon glaciers and snow that gave the colossus its name: Mont Blanc, the white mountain. But climate warming dismantles that image at alarming speed. Europe’s record heat waves this summer savaged permafrost that for millennia acted like glue on the Alpine peaks. Defrosting cliffs crumbled. Rock falls cascaded from dizzying heights. A famously dangerous, rock-prone gully, long a test for climbers ascending the 4,805-meter (15,766-foot) summit, became temporarily impassable.
"We weep for our mountain, the way it's changing. It hits us in the gut," said Stéphane Bozon, a deputy mayor in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, the French town cradled at the giant's foot. He described escalating signs of distress.
"From mid-July onward, we saw an increase in rock falls. We saw areas becoming difficult to access because of glacial retreat and snowmelt on the glaciers, with crevasses opening up and rock collapses making some areas difficult to reach or traverse," Bozon told The Associated Press.
Each degree of warming delivers an outsized punch. On the Aiguille du Midi peak, which rises to 3,842 meters (12,605 feet) within the Mont Blanc range, average temperatures for July have shot up. From a chilly 1.6 C (33.8 F) in 1994, this July’s monthly average hit a record 3.3 C (37.4 F), according to Meteo France, the national weather service. "The mountain really dried out," Bozon observed. "With temperatures unlike any I had ever experienced."
The Alps are not alone. Far across the globe, the recent devastating floods in the Himalayas offer a grim parallel. On August 26, Nepal and China witnessed surges of debris and water after bedrock and glacier ice collapsed. Scientists point to climate change as a key factor in creating conditions for that catastrophe. As Earth's global temperature climbs from fossil fuel burning, the chances of such disasters rise.
Alpine glaciers, once admired for their icy majesty, now inspire dread as they shrink and lose stability. Permafrost, once the enduring cement holding these steep rock faces together for thousands of years, took a brutal beating from successive heat waves. "That doesn't mean that all the rock faces will collapse in the coming years or decades," one researcher noted, "but quite a number of them are on the verge of becoming unstable." In Italy's Lombardy region, Alpine glaciers have lost over 40% of their surface area since 1991. "While it used to snow at high altitudes in the past, now it rains," explained Vanda Bonardo, head of the Italian branch of the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps. This shift directly affects terrain stability.
"We have to move quite quickly because this summer has shaken us and year after year we're being shaken by the glaciers' retreat."
For Chamonix, immediate preparations are underway. Bozon, responsible for town safety, warns that "serious scenarios" of glacial chunks or mountain sections potentially falling onto inhabited areas demand urgent attention. The mountain, a symbol of permanence for centuries, is shifting. Fast.
