German-Swiss border crossing reopens after explosives alert

The Rheinfelden border crossing between Germany and Switzerland reopened late Wednesday after a several-hour explosives alert and the detention of two German nationals. Detection dogs had reacted to their car during an afternoon check, but authorities confirmed no hazardous substances were found.

Following the alert, a designated danger zone was evacuated and special Federal Police units were deployed. The two German nationals in the car were taken into custody; their status remained unclear by Wednesday evening. Police did not confirm media reports linking the men to a father-son relationship or an ongoing manhunt.

The closure caused multi-kilometer traffic jams on the A861 motorway, a route linking Germany's A98 with the Swiss A3 and used by 30,000 vehicles daily, according to the German automobile club ADAC. A police spokesman confirmed, "No hazardous substances were found," and said, "The motorway has been reopened."
